Junglam Trek (Zanskar valley)

Description

The trek starts from Hemis Monastery (one of the richest monastery in Ladakh). It enters in famous Markha Valley and Zanskar via Junglam, which opens only for a month. In summers, this route is closed due to water crossing and in winters due to heavy snowfall.

Detailed Day Wise Itinerary

  • Day 1. Drive Leh to Hemis & Trek to Shangsumdo. (3682 m). 5 hrs

    Early morning Leh to Hemis by jeep, visit the HemisGompa and start trekking to Shang Sumdo: cross Martselangbridge, then ascent up valley along the river, crossing it several times before reaching Sang Sumdo. Overnight at camp. 

  • Day 2: Shang Sumdo to Lartse (4596 m) 6 hrs

    The route follows through a stunning landscape of red rocks along the slope, then along river till Chuskyurmo (sour water), on through gorges of small rivers many of which need to be crossed before camp is made for the night at Lartsa below Kongmarula Pass. Overnight at camp. 

  • Day 3. Larsa to Thochungtse 4376 mtr via Kongmarula pass 5262 mtr. 5.5 hrs

    Before descending to a high mountain pasture at Nimaling (4700m), we must ascent steeply up to Kongmarula Pass (5150m), offering a beautiful view of the northern face of Kang Yatse Peak (6400m). From Nimaling up, cross a ridge, then descent to a beautiful valley, cross river, on up again, following a rocky slope up Nimaling. Overnight at camp. 

  • Day 4. Thuchungtse to Yakrupal 4608 mtr. 5.5 hrs

    Today trek is easy as you trek through the remote Langthang valley. Langthang valley is also summer pastureland of villagers of Markha where you find sheep, donkeys, yaks and horses. Morning after breakfast, follow the route and continue along the valley down until it divides, cross the river over a wooden bridge and follow the valley to the left along the Langthang Chu upstream River. The River has the tendency of rising by late afternoon due to snow melting in the mountains. Therefore, an early start is recommended, as you have to cross the river several times. Nice and greenery campsite. Overnight: camp near the river.

  • Day 5: Yakrupal to Tilat Sumdo (3681 m) via Zalungkarpola (5159 m) 6 hrs

    As usual after breakfast, continue up along the upstream river and the scenic valley towards the top of the pass. Leaving behind the river on the way, you enter in another valley towards right side. You have easy and gentle trek as far as top of the pass. From the top of the pass, you enjoy the specular and awesome view of valley and enchanting mountains of Zanskar range on one side and on the other side, the plateau of Changthang stretching far into Tibet. Cross the pass and gently descend down. This trek path and several river crossing lead you to the right bank of the Changchu River and the camping site of Tilat Sumdo.

  • Day 6: Tilat Sumdo to Basecamp Charcharla (4379 m) 6 hrs

    It will be a diiferent day as comapre to the previous days. You will trek along the nerrow jourge and you will find some waters to cross also. The routes will be nerrow also. Overnight Camp

  • Day 7. Basecamp charcharla to Zangla Sumdoo (3787 m) via Charcharla(4929 m) 6.5 hrs

    Morning after breakfast you will start the trek.  You will climb the Charcharla pass. it will take around 3 hours to get on the top. From  the top of Charcharla. You will find beautiful view. Then you will decend towards Zanskar. Zangla Sumdo is a nomadic place were people stay with Yak and sheeps. Overnight Camp. 

  • Day 8: Zangla Sumdo to Zangla. (3619m) 4 hrs

    A easy day trek with all decend along the valley of Zangla. On the way you will visit the Royal palace of Zangla. You will find the people working in the fiend. you can also visit the Nunnery of Zangla. Overnight Camp. 

  • Day 9: Zangla to Karsha (3664 m) 5hrs

    After breakfast you will trek towards, You will cross the bridge of Pishu village and continue your trek fromthe rightside of Zanskar river. On the way you will cross Rinam village. just after Rinam you can seethe centre of Zanskar. Evening you will visit the Karsha Monastery. From Karsha Monastery you will find beautiful view of Zanskar Monastery. overnight Camp. 

  • Day 9. Karsha to Padum (3567 m) 4 hrs

    Last and easiest day of trek. You will cross the beautiful village like Ufti, Pibiting and skidsherak. Padum is the capital of Zanskar. Evening you can get internet facility in the market. Overnight in Hotel.
